Underwater locomotion from oscillatory shape deformations

چکیده
This paper considers underwater propulsion that is generated by variations in body shape. We summarize and extend some of the emerging approaches for the uniform modeling and control of such underactuated systems. Two examples illustrate these ideas.

Oscillatory motions of an active deformable particle.
We investigate dynamics of an active particle in which shape deformations occur spontaneously. In two dimensions, the deformations are expanded in terms of the Fourier series and the couplings of different modes are taken into consideration truncated up to lower orders. We focus our attention on the special symmetrical structure between the coupled equations of n- and 2n-mode deformations for n...
متن کاملPassive swimming in viscous oscillatory flows.
Fluid-based locomotion at low Reynolds number is subject to the constraints of Purcell's scallop theorem: reciprocal shape kinematics identical under a time-reversal symmetry cannot cause locomotion. In particular, a single degree-of-freedom scallop undergoing opening and closing motions cannot swim. Most strategies for symmetry breaking and locomotion rely on direct control of the swimmer's sh...
متن کاملSimulation and optimization of live fish locomotion in a biomimetic robot fish
This paper presents simplified hydrodynamics model for a biomimetic robot fish based on quantitative morphological and kinematic parameters of crangiform fish. The motion of four Pangasius sanitwongsei with different length and swimming speed were recorded by the digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and image processing methods and optimal coefficients of the motion equations and appropria...
متن کاملRobotic Systems Development of a Lobster - Inspired Underwater Microrobot Regular Paper
Biomimetic underwater microrobots are of great interest for underwater monitoring operations, such as pollution detection and video mapping in restricted underwater environments. Generally speaking, compact structure, multi‐functionality, flexibility and precise positioning are considered incompatible characteristics for underwater microrobots. Nevertheless, we have designed...
متن کاملExperimental investigation of efficient locomotion of underwater snake robots for lateral undulation and eel-like motion patterns
Underwater snake robots offer many interesting capabilities for underwater operations. The long and slender structure of such robots provide superior capabilities for access through narrow openings and within confined areas. This is interesting for inspection and monitoring operations, for instance within the subsea oil and gas industry and within marine archeology. In addition, underwater snak...
